The £50 million No.1 Nottingham Science Park project by specialist regeneration developer Blueprint has been nationally recognised as the premier example of sustainable development on a UK science park.
Already a multi-award winning development, it has now been chosen by the country's leading authority on science parks as the winner of the UK Science Park Association award for innovative design of a building demonstrating environmental sustainability.
The award, which Blueprint collected on the first anniversary of the building's launch, is the latest in a string of successes at national and regional awards recognising Blueprint's innovative work and its genuine commitment to leading edge design and environmental sustainability.
Paul Wright, Chief Executive of the UK Science Park Association, said: "The judges felt that this award should go to No. 1 Nottingham Science Park as it is setting and achieving a new standard for environmentally sustainable development on UK science parks. It has demonstrated that "green" buildings can combine outstanding architecture and environmental performance with commercial viability and furthermore they achieved their ambitious aims to achieve a 60% saving in CO2 emissions. There are many green features of the building that impressed the judges and it is set to be the first building of its kind in Nottingham to achieve an A rated EPC."
Dominique Woods, centre manager at No.1 Nottingham Science Park, collected the award. She said: "It was a fantastic night, and we were delighted to be recognised by this leading body on designing, planning and creating science parks in the UK. Our aim with No.1 Nottingham Science Park was to genuinely minimise our impact on the environment - both during the construction process, and then occupancy, and this award recognises that we have achieved that aim."
No.1 Nottingham Science Park, which offers space from 1,000 square feet to 40,000 square feet, is the centrepiece of Blueprint's 12-acre extension to Nottingham Science Park. The development includes a public boardwalk over a wetland habitat while the building has a wide range of sustainable features, including a biomass boiler.
Blueprint has worked with a range of partners on No.1 Nottingham Science Park, including emda, Nottingham City Council and Greater Nottingham Partnership, and the project was part financed by the European Regional Development Fund. The boardwalk was part financed by emda as public realm.
