A biomass heating installation by Rural Energy is powering a major new landmark in Nottingham Science Park and helping to drive forward design and sustainability standards on UK science and business parks.

No.1 Nottingham Science Park, the focal point of a £50 million, 12-acre extension to Nottingham's existing science park, offers space from 1,500 sq ft to 42,000 sq ft for knowledge based science and technology businesses.

Tenants will benefit from efficient biomass heating equipment from Rural Energy, which together with a range of other energy efficiency measures, has cut carbon emissions by an estimated 60 per cent compared with 1997 building regulation standards for comparable buildings.

The site occupied by No.1 Nottingham Science Park was a former Victorian tip that had been derelict for many years before development began. Specialist regeneration developers Blueprint reclaimed the contaminated land to create a new environment that not only delivers innovative, multi award-winning architecture and Grade A working space, but which does it in a responsible way for future generations.

A Hertz Biomatic 400kW biomass heating system was installed to improve the carbon footprint of the development, contributing towards the significantly reduced operational costs for occupiers.

The boiler system exceeds the strictest emission regulations and includes various environmentally friendly features such as lambda probe control and temperature sensing, which monitors exhaust values and reacts to different fuel qualities to obtain perfect combustion and low emission values, automatic pipe cleaning during operation to guarantee high levels of efficiency and minimise heat loss. Multi-cyclone grit arrestors for flue gas dust extraction mean the whole system is compliant with the Clean Air Act Smoke Control Zone legislation.

With the installation of the Herz Biomass system, Rural Energy has helped Blueprint achieve its goal of making genuine sustainable architecture that works in a commercial context.

With over ten projects across the East Midlands - whether completed, underway or in the early concept stages - Blueprint is working alongside a wide range of organisations to deliver difficult mixed-use regeneration development that is environmentally, socially and commercially sustainable.

Blueprint has received a string of awards for the Nottingham Science Park development, including Developer of the Year and Design Led Project of the Year at the Midlands Property Awards 2008 and Sustainable Development of the Year at the East Midlands Property Dinner 2008.
